Capstone Reflections Due 4/17/23 (sent to seniors 3/6/23 by Mr. Paige)
Hello Class of 2023,
First, THANK YOU to everyone who has turned in their Capstone Research Paper. The papers have been fantastic. I’ll send out word that lets you know that you have officially completed that element of your Capstone by the end of this week (to all who have done so).
The next component of the project is a reflection and just as we did last year these reflections can be videoed and turned in rather than done in front of an audience. If you are eager for an in-person audience, please reach out. We may be able to arrange an opportunity for those who want a live audience to present to an Ohana, but the default plan is that you will record your reflection and submit it to a shared google folder no later than April 17th (which is after the end of the quarter and after a four day weekend).
The requirements for the reflection are these:
Capstone Reflection Presentation Rubric
1 |
2 |
3 |
4 |
|
The capstone is focused on an essential question (how did you come up with this question? Why do you think it is important?) (Does your presentation go beyond your personal biography?) |
The presentation does not clearly identify an essential question. |
The presentation identifies an essential question. |
The presentation identifies and addresses an essential question. |
The presentation focuses on an essential question and draws on multiple sources to answer it. |
Information from research is introduced to help answer the essential question (what did you learn from your research? How did you apply it to your own art? Where do you see these elements in your own art? How might you apply this to your own art in the future?) |
The research paper is not mentioned during the presentation. |
The research paper is briefly mentioned or summarized during the presentation. |
Findings from the research paper are introduced during the presentation. |
Multiple sources from the research paper are introduced and connected to the essential question, as well as the creative components. |
The presentation is fluid and engaging and runs between 20-25 minutes. (What kind of visuals did you use?) (Did you vary your speaking tempo and pitch?) (Are you making eye contact and engaging with your audience?) |
The presentation does not last a full 30 minutes. -or- Little attempt is made to engage the audience. |
The presentation is clearly un-rehearsed, mostly read from a script. -or- There is little use of visual aids and other elements. |
The presentation is rehearsed (with little reading from the script), utilizes visuals aids and other elements to create an engaging presentation. |
The presentation is well-rehearsed and masterfully combines a variety of elements to create an engaging, memorable presentation. |
Please know that you’ll get credit for your reflection based on content, not your fantastic filmmaking ability. This can be really, really simple (using a phone to record your reflection). You do not need to do fancy editing or on screen graphics and the recording doesn’t need to be anything fancier than you’d see on a Zoom. You can certainly use a slideshow as a part of your reflection, but you don’t need to entertain as much as you should concentrate on informing and sharing your own reflections.
Senior Picture Submissions for Yearbook Due Jan 31st
We will be continuing our tradition of honoring seniors with their chosen senior picture, as well as an optional quote and baby picture. If you do not submit a senior picture, we will use your most recent school picture!
Submission requirements:
- All pictures submitted must be high quality JPEG files (high quality means a larger file, that does not blur when zoomed in on–in general pictures taken on newer smartphones and all professional cameras)
- Quotes must be appropriate or appropriately censored–the editors reserve the right to choose not to print your quote.
Everything must be emailed to Miranda Zigler, miranda_zigler@beaverton.k12.or.us by January 31st, 2023, with the student’s PREFERRED name for the yearbook and last name in the subject line of your email (ie: Miranda Zigler Senior Pictures and Quote) If possible, name the file with this information as well.
Jostens will be here at ACMA during Ohana on November 9th. You will be given a packet to order your cap & gown and other graduation materials. Parents should expect a packet to come home that day.
Upcoming Dates
*11/9 -Jostens Meeting - During Ohana
*11/18 - Jostens - During lunch in Commons
*If you have missed these dates, you can purchase your cap & gown online at Jostens.com
Email from Mr. Paige 9/21/22:
Hello Class of ‘23,
I wanted to share three things with you as we near the end of your first month as seniors: first, as I mentioned in our senior assembly last week, we have a webpage on the ACMA website that we’ll use to provide information to you throughout the year. Right now it has the date and time of graduation, a link to Jostens, and a handful of information. As we move forward there will be lots of other information there. You can find the page at: https://acma.beaverton.k12.or.us/academics/graduation
Next, on October 11 from 5:30-6:30 PM our counselors will be hosting a Senior Family Night. This isn’t mandatory, but if you come you can expect to get good information about understanding transcripts, making the transition from ACMA, and more. The plan is to provide food and child care (in case you have a younger sibling). You’ll get more information on this soon.
Finally, Capstones. Breathe. Another breath. Okay… we know that Capstones are happening this year (as they did last year and every year except when we were at home because of the pandemic). We know that you’ll research a topic you’re interested in, write a research paper on that topic, reflect on what you’ve learned, and finally present your art. Right now a committee is forming to add details to what we know, but you can count on those three things and to help you plan some tentative dates are:
Research Paper due February 22nd
Tentative Reflection due date April 5
Artistic Presentation April (a date after the reflection)
These dates might change, but won’t be earlier. Next week I hope to have some more guidance out to you about the research paper, but right now all you need to be thinking about is the topic you’re interested in and start reading, watching, and learning about that topic.
I wish you a great end to September,
BP
